The Basics

What is a breast MRI?

Breast MRI uses a magnet, radio waves and contrast to show blood flow through breast tissue. Because cancers tend to recruit their own blood supply, MRI can reveal findings that a mammogram or ultrasound cannot, especially in dense tissue.

It complements rather than replaces mammography, and is most often used for high-risk screening, a known genetic mutation, a strong family history, or to clarify something already seen. Our Glendale team pairs breast MRI with 3D mammography and Sonocine automated ultrasound for complete breast care.

FAQs

Questions about breast MRI.

Women at high lifetime risk, those with a BRCA or other genetic mutation, a strong family history, very dense breast tissue, or anyone whose mammogram finding needs further clarification.
No. Breast MRI complements mammography, mammograms detect calcifications that MRI can miss. Most high-risk patients alternate or combine both.
Yes, in almost all cases. Gadolinium contrast is what makes abnormal blood flow in breast tissue visible, so an IV is placed before the scan.
Most plans cover breast MRI for high-risk screening or diagnostic follow-up. We verify your benefits and handle prior authorization before you come in.
Yes for insurance-covered exams. Our Glendale team can help you connect with a referring provider if you don't have one.
If you are premenopausal we may schedule days 7-14 of your cycle. Wear a two-piece outfit, skip lotion or powder on your chest, and arrive 15 minutes early.
