The Basics

What is a 3D mammogram?

A 3D mammogram, tomosynthesis, takes a series of low-dose images as the scanning arc moves in a gentle arc over the breast. Software then reconstructs those images into thin slices, so the radiologist can scroll through the breast layer by layer instead of reading one flattened picture.

That matters because overlapping normal tissue is the main reason findings hide, and the main reason healthy women get called back for extra imaging. Reviewing the breast slice by slice means real findings stand out earlier and normal overlap is recognized for what it is.

FAQs

Questions about 3D mammography.

A 2D mammogram records the breast as a single flat image, so overlapping tissue can hide or mimic a finding. A 3D mammogram takes multiple low-dose images from different angles and reconstructs them into thin slices the radiologist scrolls through layer by layer.
The dose remains low and well within accepted safety limits. Modern tomosynthesis systems reconstruct the 2D view from the same acquisition, so there is no need for a separate extra exposure.
Most major plans and Medicare cover 3D screening mammography, often at no out-of-pocket cost. Our Glendale team verifies your benefits before your appointment.
Compression lasts only a few seconds per image. Most patients describe brief pressure rather than pain, and you can ask the technologist to pause at any time.
Many plans allow you to self-refer for a screening mammogram. Diagnostic studies usually need an order from your physician, call us and we will confirm what your plan requires.
Annual screening is supported by most major guidelines for women at average risk starting at age 40. Your physician's recommendation always takes priority.
