The Basics

What is a thyroid ultrasound?

A thyroid ultrasound uses a high-frequency probe to image the thyroid gland in the front of the neck. Because the gland sits close to the surface, ultrasound can resolve nodules only a few millimeters across and describe their composition, margins and blood flow.

It is most often ordered after abnormal TSH results, a lump felt on exam, or to track a known nodule over time. At our Glendale center, findings are reported using the standardized TI-RADS system so your physician gets a clear risk category, not just a description.
