The Basics

What is an abdominal ultrasound?

An abdominal ultrasound images the major organs of the upper abdomen in real time using sound waves, no radiation, no dye and no needles. The sonographer moves a probe over the skin while live images appear on screen.

It is one of the most commonly ordered tests for upper abdominal pain, abnormal liver enzymes, suspected gallstones or kidney problems. At our Glendale center, fasting beforehand keeps the gallbladder distended so it can be seen clearly.
