The Basics

What is a joint MRI?

A joint MRI images the soft tissue an X-ray cannot see, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, menisci and the labrum, along with bone marrow changes that signal stress injury. It is the standard test for suspected tears, sports injuries and unexplained joint pain.

The joint is placed in a dedicated coil sized for that body part, which is why detail is so much higher than a general scan. Our Glendale center images every joint at 3 Tesla, and orthopedic surgeons across the area refer here for that clarity.

What We Look For

What a joint MRI can detect.

ACL, MCL and meniscus tears
Rotator cuff tears and shoulder impingement
Cartilage damage and early arthritis
Labral tears of hip and shoulder
Tendon and ligament injuries
Stress fractures and bone marrow changes
Joint effusions and inflammation
Post-surgical evaluation

Every scan is read by board-certified, fellowship-trained radiologists, with the report sent to your physician within 24-48 hours.

Most insurance-covered joint MRI exams require a physician referral. Our Glendale team can help you connect with a provider.
