The Basics

What is a cardiac MRI?

Cardiac MRI images the heart in motion, the muscle, the four chambers, the valves and the blood flowing through them. Unlike CT or nuclear studies it uses no ionizing radiation, and unlike ultrasound it is not limited by body size or lung tissue.

It is often ordered after an echocardiogram when more detail is needed: to measure ejection fraction precisely, to distinguish scar from inflammation, or to characterize a cardiomyopathy. Our Glendale center performs cardiac MRI on a 3 Tesla system with AI-enhanced motion correction.

FAQs

Questions about cardiac MRI.

An echo uses ultrasound and is quick and portable. Cardiac MRI gives far more detail of the heart muscle itself, including scar tissue, inflammation and precise chamber volumes, and is not limited by body habitus or lung tissue.
Most coronary stents are MRI-safe. Many modern pacemakers and defibrillators are MRI-conditional and can be scanned with device programming support. Bring your device card so our safety screening can confirm.
Often yes. Gadolinium contrast is what shows scar tissue and inflammation in the heart muscle, but your physician decides based on the question being asked.
A cardiac MRI takes 45-60 minutes, including short breath-holds between sequences.
Yes, cardiac MRI is a diagnostic exam ordered by your cardiologist or physician. Our Glendale team coordinates directly with their office.
Most major plans and Medicare cover medically necessary cardiac MRI. We verify benefits and handle prior authorization before your visit.
