The Basics

What is a brain MRI?

A brain MRI uses a strong magnet and radio waves to image soft tissue, white matter, gray matter, the brainstem and blood vessels, with far more contrast than a CT scan can provide. Nothing about the exam involves radiation.

It is commonly ordered for persistent headaches, dizziness, seizures, memory or cognitive changes, stroke evaluation, or to follow a condition already known. At our Glendale center, every brain study is acquired on a 3 Tesla system so small lesions are easier to see.
